No.01The shop1 min
There is a particular kind of shop, increasingly rare, where the person behind the counter has read the stock. You walk in vaguely wanting something and you walk out with a specific thing, because someone who reads for a living listened to what you said and made a judgement. That is the business we are in. We are not adding to the pile of writing about education. We are standing next to the pile, having read a good deal of it, telling you which parts of it deserve your attention this week and which parts are handsomely produced filler.
This is an unfashionable proposition because it is not scalable and it is not clever. It is simply the work of reading. Someone sits down, goes through the trade press, the higher education press, the general news coverage of schools and skills, the government releases, the research blogs and the better newsletters, and forms opinions. The opinions are the product. Anyone can publish a list of links, and an algorithm can publish a longer one faster. What an algorithm cannot do is have read a piece three years ago, remember that its author has since changed position, and mention that in one line.
We say almost nothing original and we say it proudly. Original reporting is expensive, difficult and honourable, and there are people doing it well who deserve your traffic more than we do. Adding a thin fifth account of a story that four outlets have already covered properly would make us busier and make you worse informed. Curation is a real service precisely because it declines to compete with the thing it serves.

The reading is deliberately wide and deliberately unbalanced. The Australian trade press and the higher education press are read completely, because that is where most of the sector's institutional memory lives. Government and regulator publications are read as primary documents rather than as journalism. The general press is read selectively, mostly for the education coverage that appears in political and economic reporting rather than on the education page. International coverage is read for the arguments rather than for the news, since another country's funding formula is rarely relevant and another country's decade old mistake usually is. Academic work is read when it is readable, which is less often than it should be.
Nobody pays for placement.
A piece earns a mention on one of four grounds. It reports something new and does the work to stand it up. It explains something structural better than the existing explanations do. It makes an argument that is wrong in an interesting and productive way. Or it is simply written well enough that reading it is a pleasure, which is a legitimate reason to send someone somewhere and we refuse to apologise for it.
Two things do not earn a mention. Marketing dressed as commentary never runs, however smoothly it is written, and after enough years the tell becomes obvious: the piece has no sentence in it that its author could be embarrassed by. Neither does the fourth identical account of a story, unless the fourth one genuinely adds something the first three missed, in which case the note will say exactly what it adds and you can decide whether that is worth a second reading.
Nobody pays for placement. There is no arrangement under which a publisher, an institution or anybody else can buy a mention, secure a link or influence the tone of a note, and no such arrangement has been offered on terms we would accept. If that ever changes, it will be stated at the top of the page in the same size type as everything else, rather than disclosed in a footnote written to be skipped.

The measure of a good edition is how quickly you leave it.
Excerpts are short and attributed. We quote enough to show you the shape of a piece and no more, the publication is named every time, and where a quotation is doing argumentative work we say who wrote it and where. Our notes are notes, not substitutes. If you read our line about a piece and form a confident opinion about the piece without reading it, we have failed and you have been careless, in that order.
Linking is not affiliation. We have no commercial, ownership or editorial relationship with the publications we point to, and a mention here should never be read as their endorsement of us or ours of them beyond the specific piece. We link to outlets we argue with constantly. We link to outlets that would be embarrassed to be associated with us. Neither fact affects the decision, because the decision is about the piece.
Paywalled pieces are flagged before the link, never after.
Where a piece sits behind a paywall, we say so before the link rather than after it. Paywalls are how good journalism gets paid for, and a newsstand complaining that the magazines cost money would be a strange sight, so we will not pretend to be annoyed by them. You simply deserve to know what you are walking into before you spend the click, particularly on a phone, at night, with one hand free.

This happens constantly and it is the most interesting part of the job. A writer does careful work, reasons from evidence and arrives somewhere we think is mistaken. The lazy response is to leave the piece out. We consider that a small act of dishonesty, because it presents a reading list as a survey when it is really a mirror.
So the piece runs, with the disagreement stated plainly and separately. The note says what the piece argues, says that we think the conclusion is wrong, and says in one or two sentences where we think the reasoning turns. Then it stops. We do not rebut at length in the note, we do not select the excerpt to make the argument look weaker than it is, and we do not use tone to do work that argument should be doing. Sarcasm in a curation note is a confession that the editor could not find the flaw.
Anatomy of a disagreement note
The reader is trusted to disagree with us in turn. Quite often we are the ones who are wrong, and when that becomes clear we say so in a later edition rather than letting the earlier note quietly age out of view. An editor who has never publicly changed their mind is either extraordinarily lucky or not paying attention.
One rule holds absolutely. Disagreement is with arguments and never with people. We do not speculate about a writer's motives, employer, funding, politics or private life, and we do not treat a weak piece as evidence of a weak person, because everybody who writes regularly has published something they would now rather not defend. Play the argument. It is harder, it is slower, and it is the only version of this worth reading.

Our reader is not short of information. Our reader is short of confidence about which information deserves the evening.
It suits people who enjoy being argued with. Half the value here is in the notes attached to pieces we think are wrong, and a reader who only wants confirmation will find the experience irritating. It also suits people who read across boundaries, since a schools argument and a vocational training argument are frequently the same argument wearing different clothes, and one of the pleasures of reading widely is noticing that.
It suits people who want to be pointed somewhere rather than told what to think. And it is a poor fit for anyone who needs a single authoritative account of what happened this week, delivered quickly. That is a different discipline entirely, and the group publishes something that does exactly that.
Twelve tabs open, as the paragraph says. The point of a newsstand is to close nine of them.

Allegations are not reported as findings. When a piece we link to reports an allegation, our note says allegation and keeps saying it, because compression is exactly where this distinction gets lost. A summary must not do quietly what the original was careful not to do, and a curator who blurs the line while shortening someone else's careful sentence has damaged their work rather than served it.
No individual and no organisation is named here on the strength of a complaint. If the only basis for a name appearing is that somebody has complained about them, the name does not appear, and neither does a description so specific that it names by implication. This applies to the notes we write and to the excerpts we choose, since an excerpt can carry a name that our own sentence carefully avoided.
Regulatory action is mentioned only once it has been decided and published by the body responsible for taking it. Speculation about pending action is not repeated here, however well sourced it appears to be elsewhere, and a link to a piece that speculates will carry a note saying that is what the piece is doing. Reporting that something is expected is not reporting that it happened.
Corrections are published as dated notes and the original text is left standing beneath them, visibly wrong, for as long as the page exists. Errors that have been silently deleted teach a reader nothing about how much to trust the next edition, and the small embarrassment of a visible correction is the price of being believed the following week.
Any commercial interest of the publisher is disclosed inside the item that touches it, in plain words, naming the interest. Where an interest runs strongly enough that a disclosure note would not honestly fix it, the item does not run and the piece goes unmentioned. That is an unsatisfying outcome, and it is still the better of the two available ones.
Linking is not affiliation and never signals a relationship of any kind. Excerpts are kept short and attributed on every single occasion, with the publication named. Readers are sent to the original publisher rather than kept on this site, and no design decision here will ever be made with the aim of reversing that, whatever the traffic argument for doing so happens to be that year.
We claim no endorsement from any government body, regulator or industry association, and we hold no accreditation, recognition or standing that would give our opinions weight beyond their own merits. What appears here is one editor's judgement after a week of reading, offered as such. Take it exactly that seriously, which is to say seriously enough to click and not seriously enough to skip the piece.

News Gent belongs to a group of mastheads covering education and training from different angles. One compresses the week into a briefing. Others report at length. This one reads and points. The overlap is small by design, and where it exists we would rather send you to the sibling title than duplicate its work under a different name.
Sibling titles get no special treatment in the notes. They are linked when they publish something good, passed over in silence when they do not, and disagreed with in public when we think they are wrong, which happens often enough to keep everybody honest. The relationship is disclosed on the item every time, so you can weigh the compliment appropriately and discount it if you feel the discount is warranted.
None of this is advice, and none of it is a substitute for reading the thing itself. Every note here is a shorter, poorer, faster version of somebody else's work, written to help you decide whether to go and read the better version. We are a newsstand. The shop is small, the opinions are strong, the coffee is average, and the entire point is that you leave with something under your arm.
